Elvis Presley’s BMW 507 Restored
‘Ambition is a dream with a V8 engine.’ – Elvis Presley
The gorgeous BMW 507 Roadster owned by Elvis Presley will be up for auction on the 18th August at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The BMW was found two years ago stored away in a barn, it was restored by a team at BMW Group Classic. Only 254 were ever made, making it a rare car.
You might have thought that Elvis’s pink Cadillac would have been his pride but no, while stationed in Germany with the US military Private Presley bought his BMW 507 second-hand. It was an ex-press demonstrator, bought in December 1958 with a brand new engine which it had been previously raced by Hans Stuck
The car was originally a white colour which the team restored it back to as Elvis has got the car painted red to deter his loving fans from writing their number on his car.
Elvis then went on to sell the BWM to a Chrysler dealer in New York, which then got passed into the hands of Tommy Charles, who went on to race the BMW with success but there was a price to pay for the car. Charles removed the 3.2 .litre V8 engine and replaced it with a Chevrolet unit.
A space engineer, Jack Castor, bought the car after a few other had the ownership of it, to restore it. He had bought a few parts but never got round to doing it. That’s when a journalist discovered the car a put Castor in touch with BMW Classics.
Sadly Castor died in 2014 age 77 having never seen the car restored.
BMW Classics carried on restoring to its original state close to it was possible to.
