New Tougher Mobile Phone Punishments could be Approved

Despite being against the law, many drivers still use their mobile phones whilst behind the wheel, to many people’s annoyance. The current punishment was put in place in 2013 and consists of a £100 fine with 3 penalty points, a £40 increase on the fine when first introduced. HGV drivers face up to 6 points. This is because incidents involving trucks tend to be more severe. First time offenders will continue to be offered an educational course before taking the fine.

In 2014, 21 fatal accidents hold a mobile phone as a contributing factor. An alarm statistic seen as being on the phone whilst driving was banned 12 years ago. The plans are due for discussion next year.
