In 2012, Dutch couple Derk and Trudy Regter left their home in Edam, Netherlands to embark on a road the world trip in a 100 year old antique Ford Model T. The first leg their journey took them from their home town, across South Africa and into the US and Canada, crossing 22 states and covering tens of thousands of miles. In 2014, they set off on stage 2, covering a further 16,000 and in the process, the majority of South America. The couple have been supporting a variety of children’s charities as they cross the globe. This year and next will see the Regter’s cross another long list of countries, including New Zealand, Australia, China, Mongolia and Indonesia, in addition to an epic trip through the Himalayas before returning home to the Netherlands.
The retired couple bought their beloved 1915 Model T in 1997, and see that the challenge they have embarked on takes serious dedication but believe the car is robust and thanks to the simple design, it’s very easy to service and maintain. No doubt they will have had to get the toolbox out at least once on their massive trip. Derk Regter inherited his passion for vintage Ford’s from his father and grandfather and has previously owner a 1923 Model T and 1928 Model A. The car they are using has remained mostly identical to when it left the factory over 100 years ago, including the 3.0 petrol engine. The couple have had to add larger tyres to make the more bumpy roads a bit more bearable.
We wish the Regter’s the very best of luck for the rest of their mammoth journey and hope they rise awareness for the charities they are helping.
