Not everyone is a fan of loud engines and exhausts, however Ford have discovered that many people are still using the “shift by ear” technique of driving, rather than looking at the tachometer to change gear. This has become more apparent with the 1-Litre EcoBoost engine, due to the engine being only three cylinders it is naturally quieter than a four cylinder engine that most are used to.
Less cylinders equals less noise, thus it seems that many people are using a higher rpm in each gear as they are listening for the engine rather than using the tachometer. Its hoped that Fords artificial noise creating device will trick peoples ears into thinking that they are using a higher rpm than they actually are, thus changing gear earlier than they normally would. This should increase fuel economy, by lowering the time spent in the wrong gear.
