Pre Collision Assist coming to the Transit and Transit Custom

Pedestrian Detection was first developed for the Ford Mondeo, and combines a radar in the front bumper with a windscreen mounted camera to detect pedestrians. To do this, the camera and radar use the silhouette of the pedestrian, and compare it against pre-stored shapes, in order to distinguish between actual pedestrians and road furniture.

Now coming to the Transit and Transit Custom, this technology can now predict the actions of the pedestrians, and warn the driver if there is a risk of collision. The system has been tested for over 10,000 km of urban driving, and on closed circuit with life size dummies.

Pre Collision Assist works in a number of stages, first the system detects that a collision is imminent, and provides a visual and audible alarm to warn the driver. If there is no response from the driver, the brakes apply lightly and will then slow the vehicle to attempt to avoid a collision.
