Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter debuted in 2015 for the Ford S-Max and Galaxy models, and has been a big hit with 95% of vehicles being equipped with the Intelligent Speed Limiter. Now the system is being introduced to the all new Ford Edge. The system combines two other Ford technologies – the Adjustable Speed Limiter and Traffic Sign Recognition which uses a camera to scan and read traffic speed signs. The system will then adjust the throttle input to lower the speed of the car if the speed limit has been exceeded.
Stefan Kappes, the active safety supervisor of Ford of Europe said “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding, and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they see the flash of the camera, receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement. Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”
For vehicles equipped with inbuilt navigation, the Intelligent Speed Limiter can also determine the road speed from the map data.
