Westminster council has began a trial in which they are imposing a £2.45 D-Charge on pre-2015 diesel cars just to allow them to park in parts of central London, as a further part of their plan to reduce air pollution. The charge will see Westminster’s normal hourly rate rise from £4.90 to £7.35 in Hyde Park, Marylebone and some parts of Fitzrovia. Westminster council claim that the extra money generated from the charge will used to promote ‘sustainable transport’.
The D-Charge was originally outlined in January with Westminster’s cabinet member for environment, sports and community, councilor David Harvey saying “Additional chargers for diesel vehicles will mean people think twice about using highly polluting cars and invest in cleaner transport that will make a real difference in the quality of air we breathe.”
This new D-Charge will work alongside the T-Charge later in the year, where drivers of the worst polluting vehicles will have to pay £10 to drive in central London.
