Google to patent sticky bonnet for pedestrian impacts

Google will be patenting a sticky car bonnet that is designed to prevent pedestrians from bouncing off the bonnet back into the road if hit.

most fatalities occur not on the initial impact but the secondary impact so the system should hopefully reduce the number of fatal injuries if it reaches production but it seems that it will primarily be for Googles driverless fleet.

The published patent shows that the cars bonnet will be covered in a sticky layer which will be covered by an outer shell that can be painted to match the rest of the vehicle and also protects it from debris. When a pedestrian impacts the bonnet, the outer shell breaks and causes the pedestrian to stick to the bonnet.BLOG2
