A third place finish at the Wales Rally GB was enough to see Frenchman Sebastien Ogier claim his 5th straight World Rally Championship crown. Behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta WRC, Ogier finished 45.2 seconds behind M-Sport team mate and overall winner Elfyn Evans and 7.9 seconds off second place Thierry Neuville. The win was Evans first WRC victory and to cap off a great weekend for the Cockermouth based M-Sport team, the results of Evans and Ogier, confirmed the constructor’s crown. The private Ford team beat the works teams of Hyundai, Citroen and Toyota. M-Sport’s other driver Ott Tanak has contributed 2 wins and a number of podium finishes this season, and currently sits third in championship standings.
After taking the top step of the podium for the very first time, Welsh race winner, Evans went to say, “it’s been a good rally. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has stood by me for all these years – to get to this point has taken a lot. This result only makes us even hungrier for more.”
2017 is considered as a new era for WRC, with new aggressive aero packages and 400BHP+ turbo engines meaning the cars are the most powerful they have been for a while, hopefully bringing the sport back to popularity it achieved over the past decades.
The UK hasn’t had a competitive championship contender since the days of Colin McRae and Richard Burns, both of whom sadly died over 10 years ago, so could Evans win and the performance of the Ford M-Sport team mean a revival for British interests in the championship?
The title winning Fiesta is available from Dees of Wimbledon, not in WRC spec unfortunately. Take a look at our excellent new and used offers here; Dees of Wimbledon – Ford Fiesta
