Plans are in place for the UK to ban all sales of new petrol and diesel cars by the year 2040, in a move similar to what the French government have confirmed. Including in the ban will be all cars and vans and also the sale of hybrid technology vehicles. The complete ban is in line with the government’s clean air plan and which itself is response to the threat of rising levels of nitrogen oxide, which poses a major risk to public health. Ministers have suggested that air pollution holds the biggest risk to the UK’s public health, costing up to £2.7b a year in lost productivity. A government spokesman said, “poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and this government is determined to take strong action in the shortest time possible.”
