It’s been an incredible year for Vauxhall’s new Astra. High industry praise combined with impressive sales figures has seen the rejuvenated British built hatchback win multiple honours, including European Car of the Year for 2016.
Industry leading publication Autocar hosted its annual awards ceremony this week where recognition and praise was awarded to the motor industry’s best innovators and highest achievers over the last 12 months.
The new Vauxhall Astra won the status of an industry ‘Game-Changer’, the award given to vehicles that have evolved their segment and set new standards within the automotive sector. As well as praise for the design and drive of the Astra, Autocar acknowledged the car’s importance to the UK’s manufacturing industry. The Astra is built here in Britain at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port Factory and is exported across Europe.
“This excellent car is literally the reason General Motors still makes cars in large numbers in the UK. Workers and management at the company’s Ellesmere Port factory came together to fight, against long odds, to retain the place as the home of Astra – and were rewarded with the status of being the model’s lead plant.”
