Fancy owning a piece of F1 history? Well for one very lucky person, this is soon to become reality. This 1991 Benetton-Ford F1 race car, driven by world champion Nelson Piquet and future champion Michael Schumacher is up for auction next month in Monte Carlo, and expected to hit around £180,000. Powered by Ford’s 3.5-litre Series V HB V8 engine, the power unit was capable of generating a staggering 730bhp and burning a big hole in the 204 litre fuel tank.
Ford has a successful history in F1 racing, winning 176 grand prix in total since 1963, coming only second to Ferrari. The manufacturer pulled out of F1 racing in 2004 whilst powering the Jaguar team and splitting ways with Cosworth. Ford’s last win in the competition came in 2003, when Giancarlo Fisichella won an incredible Brazilian Grand Prix, even though he retired on the final lap with his car on fire in the pit lane. After the race was red flagged, the final result was brought forward to the previous lap where Fisichella was leading.
