Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground has the honour of hosting Europe’s very first autonomous vehicle track day, the first of a series of events specifically designed for self-driving car development and software writers to test their devices in a controlled place. Innovate UK, the government supported organisation, will be holding the test days three months apart at locations all over the continent. The majority of autonomous testing has been covered on private land owned by manufacturers, so this testing series will be the first great opportunity for the public to see some of the new technology we may be seeing on our roads in the not so distant future.
Earlier in the year, during her speech, the Queen spoke of the industries growing potential as a motivator and urged our country to became a leader in development of new technologies. Transport Systems Catapult, which is Innovate UK’s mobility division predicts that by 2025, the autonomous market will be worth £52 billion.
