Chief engineer of the Focus RS Tyrone Johnson spoke to AutoCar and mentioned that his next job was to re-create a new Fiesta and Focus ST hot hatch. Johnson has explained that “both cars will retain their blend of accessible performance and everyday usability, but will also have to evolve to deal with competition from new rivals.” Johnson would not confirm any dates for the new hatchbacks but they are rumoured to hit the showrooms in 2019 or 2020; a year after the new non ST cars are expected.
Tyrone Johnson also spoke of the romours of a Mondeo ST, but all but confirmed it was not going to go into production. He said that it’s rival, the BMW M3/5 and Audi S4/6 are pumping out around 500bhp, which would be a big ask for a Mondeo. He further mentioned that “making a fast Mondeo fit our HP2 category would be very difficult.”
