Jeeps new 300 hp Hurricane turbocharged four-cylinder engine

Jeep has been developing a new 300 hp engine nick named the Hurricane for the next gen Wrangler. The Hurricane name has been used before on an engine, the early Jeep CJ models starting in the 1950s.

The Hurricane will be a 2.0 litre with twin-scroll turbocharging and direct fuel injection with variable valve timing capable of making up to 300 horsepower.

With some Wranglers getting only 17 MPG in a city and not much more out of one, this could be Jeeps way of getting better fuel economy without losing power.

The 2016 Wrangler comes with a standard 3.6L Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower while the Hurricane engine is expected to offer similar horsepower to the Pentastar V6 in the current Wrangler the Hurricane will almost certainly weight less than the Pentastar V6, so the new engine should work with the new body and chassis to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle.

As well as the above engine there is also rumors of a lighter aluminium body that is being developed and to help efficiency further a potential hybrid.
