London’s T-Charge comes into force

Diesel smog, haze, pollution

6,500 motorists are expected to affect from Monday 23rd October, when the government launches its T-Charge. The £10 T-Charge is for pre-Euro 4 emission cars, (normally pre 2005), pre-Euro 3 for quadricycles or motorised tricycles (motorcycles are not subject to the T-Charge) and pre-Euro IV for HGVs, buses and coaches. The T-Charge will will run in addition to the current £11.50 congestion charge and run from 7am-6pm Monday to Friday.

The air pollution in London is currently some of the worst in the world, and London mayor, Sadiq Khan hopes the new T-Charge will significantly reduce the levels of harmful air. He stated,“the air in London is lethal and I will not stand by and do nothing. Today I’m announcing bold proposals which are critically needed to safeguard Londoners from our air quality health crisis.” He went on the announce plans of a Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which subject to approval will be enforced from April 2019. This ULEZ will replace the T-Charge but target drivers of pre-Euro 6 diesel vehicles and pre-Euro 4 petrol cars. Further plans suggest that the zone will be expanded to the North and South Circular roads after 2022.
