Fiat 500X set for 200bhp Abarth makeover

The latest reports indicate that Fiat is ready to go ahead with it’s Abarth version of the recently launched 500X crossover: “The 500X is a good body for Abarth,” Fiat designer Roberto Giolti said – It’s absolutely perfect in terms of drivability, control. The driving seat is perfectly measured to control the car. So the Abarth would be perfect.”

Given that the 500 Abarth hatchback already offers 160 hp and that the 500X is considerably larger, it would require a bit more punch (proposed 200bhp) along with a tighter suspension, beefed-up brakes and more aggressive styling inside and out.

The introduction of an Abarth 500X would see Abarth, and therefore Fiat, take a bigger piece of the pie in the growing crossover sector, currently dominated by the Nissan Juke Nismo RS, and Mini Countryman JCW.

Our main image (courtesy of Auto Express) shows what we could expect from the racy new Abarth. The Fiat 500X’s high-riding stance will be lowered, with chunkier bumpers, deeper side skirts and larger wheels all helping to make the hot model look meaner.

Twin tailpipes, a large rear spoiler and an under-bumper diffuser will complete the radical overhaul, while inside, expect deep bucket front seats, extra sports dials and gauges, as well as plenty of ‘Scorpion’ badges.
