Save the hassle & scrap your old car to raise money for charity

Time to replace your old banger but want to save the hassle of selling it or getting the best scrap value for it? Car recycling firm runs a scheme allowing people to donate their car to charity.

The service, named Charity Car, allows motorists to choose from more than 50 participating charities to benefit from their unwanted motor. They can arrange to deliver the car or have it picked up free-of-charge – even if it hasn’t got an MOT or doesn’t run.

The car will then be assessed and either scrapped – in which case the scrap value (typically around £60 for a medium-sized car) will be donated to the owner’s charity of choice; or sold via auction. The company will handle all the relevant paperwork to make sure you’re no longer the registered keeper and aren’t liable for any fines received in the vehicle.

“It’s a simple and effective scheme that allows motorists to donate the full market value of their old car and has already raised over £122,000 for worthy causes,’ says Charity Car spokesperson Kathryn Byng. “All our official partners are registered charities and range from larger organisations including Oxfam and Cancer Research UK to smaller local ones such as Royal Trinity Hospice in London.”

Children’s charity Make-A-Wish have had 49 vehicles donated to it through the scheme so far, raising a total of more than £4,000.

“This is terrific, said Make-A-Wish spokesperson Katy Cosgrove, “as every penny raised helps us grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.”
